Printmaking in Britain: A General History From its Beginnings to the Present Day

The main object of this book is to present a factual history of prints insofar as they have contributed to the main history of British art, either in their reproductive capacity or as images conceived solely in terms of the printmaking medium. Little space has been devoted to the discussion of prints whose interest is mainly decorative or technical, such as Baxter prints or the great bulk of sporting prints, and description of technical processes has been kept to the minimum consistent with clarity. The history of prints and of book illustration frequently mingle, but with the exception of occasional forays into the latter, this is a history of separate prints. The amount of material that remains to jostle and push for attention is formidable, and, in preference to an idle listing of names, some attempt has been made to illustrate and discuss with reasonable fullness the work of at least some of the more important printmakers.
