Gudrun Petersen followed traditional on-the-job training from 1989 to 1991 to become a photographer. She has been working as a freelance photographer ever since, mainly for picture agency Joker. Her photos have been published in German magazines and newspapers, Der Spiegel, Suddeutsche Zeitung, FAZ, Focus, Financial Times Deutschland, Greenpeace, Wirtschaftswoche, Wochenspiegel, and they have also featured in TV programs on ARD, Arte, NDR, WDR, ZDF. More extensive work includes a Villeroy & Boch porcelain edition with childrens motifs as well as an illustrated book about Aachen in 2004. Her photos have featured in exhibitions in Cologne, Aachen, Bonn, Brussels and Wiesbaden. She lives in Aachen and Hamburg, Germany.
