Ella Victoria Dobbs (1866-1952) was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She earned a primary school teaching certificate and began teaching in Nebraska, then Illinois then Utah. In 1895 she was teaching in Pasadena, California. She enrolled in the Throop Polytechnic Institute studying sloyd (manual arts) and graduated in 1900. In 1902 she taught there after which she became Assistant Professor of Manual Arts at the University of Missouri. She was the first chair of the Applied Arts department there in 1924. Her works include: Primary Handwork (1914), Handwork in Grades One to Six (1916), Illustrative Handwork for Elementary School Subjects (1917) and First Steps in Weaving (1938).
