Joseph Gregoire de Roulhac Hamilton (1878-1961) was a prominent American historian who emphasized how Southern whites had suffered under Reconstruction. He was head of the history department at the University of North Carolina from 1908 to 1930. His works include: Reconstruction in North Carolina (1914), Party Politics in North Carolina, 1835- 1860 (1916), The Life of Robert E. Lee for Boys and Girls (with Mary Hamilton, 1917), North Carolina Since 1860 (1919), Education for Citizenship (1921) and The Making of Citizens (with Edgar W. Knight, 1922).
