On the 15th of June, 1851, Dr. Robert Vaughan, President of the Lancashire Independent College, and editor of the " British Quarterly Review," was present in Hope Street Church, and heard a sermon on the text, " But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us." In the August number of the " Review " appeared a description of this sermon, which Mr. Martineau felt to be a misrepresentation of its scope and spirit; and accordingly he was induced to print the sermon exactly as it was delivered, under the title, "The God of Revelation his own Interpreter."
