Victor Mapes (1870-1943), who also wrote under the pseudonyms Maveric Post and Sidney Sharp, was an American author, playwright, critic and stage manager. His works include: The Flower of Yeddo (1899), Don Caesar"s Return (1901), Captain Barrington (1903), The Boomerang (with Winchell Smith) (1915), The New Henrietta (with Winchell Smith) (1913), The Hottentot (with William Collier) (1920) and Heart and Soul (1921). Many of his plays were made into successful films. The Saphead - a 1920 comedy film featuring Buster Keaton, the actor"s first starring role in a full-length feature and the film that launched his career - was a merging of two stories, Bronson Howard"s play The Henrietta (1887) and Mapes and Smith"s novel The New Henrietta.
