The present work might be described as, to some extent, a contribution to the history of the theory of harmony. Notwithstanding the extensive and highly speciahzed hterature which we possess, deahng with the history and the art of music, a hterature which of late years has been enormously enriched, comparatively little attention has been given to the history and development of the theory of harmony, which, ever since the time of Rameau, has been considered b} musicians themselves to be intimatehconnected with the art of music.
