Excerpt from Quatre-Bras, Ligny and Waterloo: A Narrative of the Campaign in Belgium, 1815
The following pages are intended to afford a somewhat detailed narrative of the events of the campaign in Belgium during the four days June 15-18, 1815. Military criticism, as far as possible, is excluded; and where it is essential the writer has in general preferred to use the words of those entitled to speak with an authority to which he has no claim.
To excuse the addition of another detailed account of the Campaign and Battle of Waterloo to the already redundant writings on the subject, the writer may be pardoned for citing his own experience. Having occasion to acquaint himself with these events, he found, on consulting the standard authorities, that no existing narrative set forth accurately the general features of the campaign and the four battles included in it. The popular notions concerning them he found to be mostly derived from accounts prepared at the time, hastily and from inadequate information, yet which secured a standing from which they have never been dislodged.
