Carl Peterson 1938-2011 According to family lore, Carl entered into this life on the kitchen table, in a small house on Rockland Street in Calumet. The street was nothing more than a gravel path, not even worthy of a street sign. He liked to tell people that his mother was also in attendance. Carl"s love affair with the written word (about which his wife heartily approved) began early in life; sharing his thoughts and feelings in his own creative manner energized Carl and helped sustained him for most of his 73 years. He discovered a way to share his particular bent on life, with all its complexities and eccentricities a?? and get paid for it a?? as a columnist for the Daily Mining Gazette over three decades. His topics were as varied as his character; in many ways they were the same thing. Carl talked about his life, but the reader often felt that he (she) was reading about his own, because Carl was at the same time everyman and a unique character. That was, perhaps, a reason his columns were as popular as the front page a?? because everyone likes to see himself (herself) in the paper as he prompted our thoughts into days gone by, reminded us of this or that, or a certain a??instance,a?? the passing of an era, or a friend, or a time.
