It is the 19th Century, during the Industrial Revolution, when the younger son of a Franconia farmer and his wife move from the country to the city of Munich to provide for their growing family. With resilience and resourcefulness they overcome poverty and political turmoil as they raise eight children. Seven of the siblings survive the hardships of their era, including World War I. Despite the early death of their mother, the family remains intact and the Fella children grow into adulthood as they witness the beginning of World War II.
