Hercules "Chico" Butler was born December 10, 1932 in Orangeburg, South Carolina and raised in Coatesville, PA (Chester County). He is a combat veteran of the United States Army (1951-1954), and also a Disable Veteran, suffering with PTSD who received an honorable discharge after completing 3 years of service. He then returned to Philadelphia to work as an entertainer and is well-known for his Afro-Cuban dances and Spanish songs. In the summer of 1956, his life was interrupted when he was unlawfully arrested by Chester County authorities. In the custody of the Pennsylvania State police, Chico was unable to communicate with his family until he was tried before a grand jury in 1957. Originally granted a life sentence, he was released from prison 16 years later; with a sentence of Life on Parole.
