Excerpt from Technical Training: Being a Suggestive Sketch of a National System of Industrial Instruction, Founded on a General Diffusion of Practical Science Among the People
Not many years ago the present volume would have required another one for its justification. It is written on the assumpton, - 1stly - that Scientific Knowledge when judiciously selected and appropriately taught, adds very materially to the chances of Industrial Success, - 2ndly - that this maxim having been assiduously adhered to by some Continental Nations, has given a very marked impulse to their industrial prosperity, and 3rdly - that our own can only be secured by following a similar course. - Now, not many years ago, Science, instead of being considered as almost synonymous with Practical Wisdom, was regarded with general distrust, the rapid progress of other Nations was stoutly denied, and it was a mark of patriotism to maintain that our industrial supremacy was and ever would be unshaken. - In vain did reliable Authors faithfully describe the Technical Institutions established in foreign countries, and first predict the probable results, then after a time relate the actual ones.
