Excerpt from Course of Study for the High Schools of Chicago

Sec. 45. The School Year.) The school year shall consist of ten months of four weeks each, and shall be divided into three terms, as follows:

Fall Term: Beginning on the first Monday of September and continuing sixteen weeks.

Winter Term: Beginning on the Monday succeeding the first day of January and continuing sixteen weeks.

Summer Term: Beginning on the first Monday in May and continuing eight weeks.

Sec. 46. The School Semesters.) In administering the courses of study in the elementary, high, and Normal schools, the school year shall be divided into two semesters, one including the school months of September, October, November, December, and January; the other, the school months of February, March, April, May, and June; and, above the primary department, regular promotion in the various grades and years of all schools shall be made at the end of each semester.

Sec. 47. Holidays.) Schools shall be closed on all legal holidays and on the day following Thanksgiving Day. By order of the President of the Board, any school may be closed on other occasions, but not to exceed three days in any one year.

On the afternoon of the school days immediately preceding Lincoln"s Birthday, Washington"s Birthday, and Memorial Day, suitable exercises commemorative of these holidays shall be held in the several schools, subject to the direction of the Superintendent.

Sec. 63. Times of Graduation.) The graduation exercises for the mid-year classes in the public schools shall not occur before Friday morning of the last week of the school month of January; for end-year classes, the graduation exercises shall not occur before the close of the afternoon session of school on the last Thursday of the school month of June; the schools shall continue in session until noon of the last Friday of the school month of June.

Sec. 97. Medical Inspection of Pupils.) Pupils of the public schools shall be subject to examination by medical inspectors under authority of the Department of Health of the City of Chicago.

Sec. 98. Vaccination Before Admission.) A pupil shall not be received into any public school without furnishing a physician"s certificate showing that he has been successfully vaccinated or otherwise protected against smallpox; nor shall a pupil who has not been vaccinated, or revaccinated within seven years, be allowed to remain in any school, unless he has had either smallpox or varioloid.
