This little book is an outgrowth of a course of lectures given before various teachers" institutes and the author"s own classes in education. The lectures are published at the earnest solicitation of a number of superintendents who desired that their teachers might have the matter in printed form.
It is believed that the subject-matter is vital and concrete, for it deals with the work of the school room, and not with the theories of the educators. The attempt has been made to base all discussions on a good psychology and sound educational principles, but these have been assumed rather than presented. This fact will account for what may seem a somewhat dogmatic method of treatment of certain topics. The aim is to present immediate and concrete help in the actual problems of the real recitations in our present-day schools. Therefore the lectures contain much of illustration and little of theory.
The ten questions given at the end of each chapter are of such nature that their answers are to be sought chiefly in the daily recitations of the reader. They may be used simply as helps in reading the book and applying its teachings; they will be found worth while for this purpose. The answers may also be required by the county superintendent as an evidence of careful professional reading upon which to base renewals of certificates.
