Excerpt from Ceremonies Connected With the Unveiling of the Bronze Statue of Gen. Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson, at Lexington, Virginia, July 21st, 1891
The movement for the erection of a monument at the grave of Lieutenant-General Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson had its inception in a meeting, at the house of Adjutant William W. Lewis in Lexington, in January, 1875, of Confederate soldiers who had served under Jackson.
It was determined to inaugurate the movement, the corporators were selected, and Col. Charles A. Davidson, who had served as an officer of the First Virginia Battalion, was appointed a committee to prepare a charter and have it enacted into a law by the General Assembly of Virginia. Such a charter was prepared and became a law on the 8th day of March, 1875. It incorporated James K. Edmondson, William W. Lewis, Charles A. Davidson, James J. White, Alexander T. Barclay, William A. Anderson, John C. Boude, John T. Sayers, John W. Lyell, William F. Johnston, William McLaughlin, Henry K. Douglass, Robert W. Hunter, Samuel J. C. Moore, Asher W. Harman, Thomas D. Hanson, George G. Grattan, James A. Walker, Hunter H. McGuire, James P. Smith, George G. Junkin, John H. B. Jones, David E. Moore, James L. White, Calvin M. Dold, and such other persons as they should associate with them, by the name and style of the Jackson Memorial Association.
