Excerpt from Two Lectures on Intelligence
Gentlemen,
The object of my lecture this afternoon is to explain what Intelligence actually has done and what it has been asked to do during operations which have taken place during the last three years.
To start with, our Army General Staff is, generally speaking, divided into two branches. Operations and Intelligence. The duty of the Operations branch is to draw up plans of operations for the defeat of the enemy; but for any plan to succeed, a great deal has to be known about the enemy, and it is the duty of the Intelligence branch to give that to the Operations. The other side of No Mans Land is dealt with by the Intelligence, this side by Operations. The other side of No Man"s Land is dealt with by the intelligence, this side y Operations. The operations branch turn to us and say, "What is the enemy going to do?""How is he going to attack?" "How strong is he?" "How many divisions are there?" "How many yards of the front line is this division holding?" "How many rifles per yard?" "With this system of trenches pointed out in the map, from this network of trenches, which of the trenches does he keep and which does he not hold?" "Of the communicating trenches shown on the map, which does he use?"
