The German Field Exercise, 1888, is divided into three parts.

The first deals with the details of drill, the second treats of the handling of troops in action and their previous training for war, and the third part embraces parade movements.

The first and third parts apply more particularly to the German army, whereas the second is of general interest to soldiers of all nations, being the most recent exposition of the most approved principles of modern European fighting.

The following three main conditions of success are brought prominently forward: -
