Gentlemen: - The subject for our consideration is Washington and his Army, their trials and triumphs, and the political condition of affairs in this vicinity, during their march through and return to New Jersey, in the memorable winter of 1776 and 1777, until they went into winter quarters at Morristown.
No period during the struggle for our independence was more eventful than this, none more interesting, none more important in its relations and consequences, to this State in particular, and to the country at large.
It will be my endeavor to present to your notice a few of the many prominent characters connected with the historic renown of those days, and to portray in fresh colors some of the achievements and sufferings of our more humble Revolutionary Patriots engaged in this portion of their glorious career, because, in the first place, I love and venerate their memories, and because, moreover, I do not think that history has yet done ample justice to their fame.
