In making the following selections from the prose writings of Hector Berlioz, my main object has been to give to the English-reading public such passages as are most strikingly characteristic of the man.
In the three volumes, entitled respectively "Les Soirees d"Orchestre," "Les Grotesques de la Musique," and "A Travers Chants," there might have been found several chapters of more serious value to the art of Music than many that I have selected; but they only cover ground that has been gone over often before, and do not throw so much light upon Berlioz"s own intrinsic nature as do some of the apparently more trivial selections I have preferred to make.
