Excerpt from Clinical Memoirs on the Diseases of Women, Vol. 1 of 2
The title of this work clearly indicates that I have no intention of writing a dogmatic treatise on the diseases of women. Indeed I do not think it is possible in the present state of knowledge to write such a work. In saying this, however, I do not wish to pass any criticism upon the treatises which have appeared in Germany and France; my only object is to justify the publication of this work in the particular form which I have adopted. Some, I know, have thought it possible to produce a work, which, in my opinion, ought not to be attempted until a variety of disputed questions of great importance in any dogmatic treatise on gyn?cology are satisfactorily settled. For this reason I shall abstain from the discussion of several affections of the generative organs which are at present surrounded by doubt, either because their existence has not been proved by clear evidence; as, for instance, the disease called acute parenchymatous metritis; or because they are met with only in connexion with other diseases, so that the symptoms of each cannot be separated.
It is my intention only to treat of such affections as are undoubted, and whose symptomatology is attested by a goodly number of cases. I take care at once to point out the real scope of this work, in order to avoid any misconception on the part of those who might expect to find in these pages an anatomical classification of diseases. As I have said, I believe this to be impossible of accomplishment in the present state of our knowledge of these subjects.
When I began the work I determined that I would be guided simply and entirely by the teachings of experience; I still think that the best course to pursue, though I did not consider how long a time it would take. I have thought it necessary to study clinically each functional disorder of the genital organs, so as to recognise their various causes, and from observation alone to deduce the symptoms of these several affections.
