Excerpt from Diseases of the Throat, Nose, and Ear
It is with great pleasure that I have undertaken the revision of this work by my friend and former colleague - Dr. Porter - a work which so admirably fulfils its object.
In the four years which have elapsed since the publication of the first edition, there have of course been certain additions to our knowledge, and these I have endeavoured to incorporate in the present volume. Thus, the introduction and value of suspension laryngoscopy have necessitated a reference to this method of examination, although its minute description does not come within the scope of the work. Again, certain additions have been made with regard to vestibular reactions, and the value of the pointing test as a diagnostic in cerebellar abscess has been noted.
A number of comparatively minor therapeutic suggestions and pathological observations have also been incorporated, while I have described what Dr. Porter termed "Primary Inflammation of the Labyrinth," as "Abortive Cerebrospinal Meningitis."
As I retired from practice in 1910, I may, perhaps, without rendering myself open to a charge of egotism, say a word in vindication of my position as editor of a new edition of this excellent book.
