That these offspring of my brain and heart, so nobly godfathered by the Societies before whom they were delivered, might not be born and abandoned, or condemned to float about during their precarious existence as newspaper articles without "a local habitation and a name," is the chief motive for embodying them in a book.
It is sincerely hoped nothing will be found in these addresses but what will prove, in some degree at least, informing to the intellect, stimulating to the conscience, and helpful to the heart of the reader.
I hereby gladly express my thanks to the orders which, by their courtesy, have given me the occasions to voice the sentiments herein contained.
