Excerpt from Indestructibility of the American Union
Ladies and Gentlemen:
For some time past we have had a desire to address the citizens of Boston upon the present situation of this government and the importance and necessity of preserving the American Union, - the land of our birth, -
"The land of the free, and the home of the brave."
Since the commencement of our national difficulties; since the hostile attitude of South Carolina was first assumed, and the defiant Secession ordinances were adopted by the Cotton States; since the boom of the cannon has shaken the ramparts of Fort Sumter, and the cry of war has sent gloom and despair to many a lone fireside, has the question been asked, - Can the American Union fall? Will the experiment of a republican government prove a failure in the United States of America?
