True friendship must be mutual and reciprocal. A one-sided friendship is no friendship at all. To love without return may be noble, inspiring, elevating in its tendencies and effects, but it is not friendship. To devote our lives, and concentrate our interests upon one who does not need us, who looks upon us with kindly patronage, but who feels no necessity for our love, no void in his heart without it - this is not the ideal of friendship, and our Saviour would not offer us this hollow mockery of the purest and tenderest relationship possible to man.
