To the best of my recollection, it was through the criticism of Christianity by scientists that my attention was first directed to the study of Society, or to what is now called the science of Sociology. From the first somewhat surprised at the character of many of the statements made, I have been led to study science for myself, and especially the sciences of Biology, Ethics and Sociology, as well as to make some slight excursions into the domain of philosophy, with a view to discovering, if possible, the true attitude of the human mind toward the supersensuous. The result, after long years, is in the writing of this little book, which, if not scientific in form, is so, I trust, in its regard for fact, as it certainly is in the convictions and sympathies that have inspired the writing of it.
