Parthia Proper, the earliest home (so far as our knowledge extends) of the Parthian people, was, like Persia Proper and Macedonia Proper, a tract of somewhat scanty dimensions. From the south-eastern corner of the Caspian Sea there extends, in a direction a little south of east, a narrowish mountain region, connected at one extremity with the lofty Elburz range, which skirts the Caspian on the south, and, at the other, with the Paropamisus, or Hindu Kush. On either side, northwards and southwards, stretch for hundreds of miles extensive sandy or gravelly deserts, that to the north known as the desert of Khorasan or Khiva, and that to the south as the Great Salt Desert of Iran.
