In the following pages I have endeavoured, as well by some discussion of the fatal influence of certain growing opinions, as by reference to past events recorded inauthentic history, to defend the institutions of society, against a sect of reformers, still militant among us.
I am anxious to obtain the approbation of those, whose superior judgment and extensive knowledge, entitle them to decide the important controversy; and chiefly of one whom posterity will regard as a distinguished promoter of sound philosophy and liberal science, and consult as the most eminent historian of the present age.
