President Hoover stands right on the "X" which marks the spot where the election of 1932 will occur. He is determined to succeed himself, come what may, and prove to the country that his name need not go down to history as the the synonym of national distress. He is the biggest issue of the election. Some of the Democrats say they need no other issue, no platform, not even a candidate - just the name "Herbert Hoover" - to sweep the country. Some of the Republicans pretend that he is a man of sad and lonely strength, a sort of tragic demigod doomed to suffer in silence for the sins of the American people. Most of us merely see a serious and isolated man, who means well, tries hard, and is doing his utmost to serve the country in his own way. A humorless and earnest figure who deserves better luck and, with that luck, might go down to history as one of our abler leaders.
Whatever the facts are, Herbert Hoover is himself. He does not pretend to be a hero, saint, or second Lincoln. He is neither an imitation Roosevelt nor a synthetic Wilson.
