Excerpt from The Medicine of the Ancients: An Introductory Address Delivered at the Liverpool Royal Infirmary School of Medicine, October 2nd, 1875
Gentlemen,
We are assembled to-day in obedience to a time-honoured custom throughout the Medical Schools of England, and on the present occasion the favour of my colleagues has accorded to me the honour and privilege of addressing you. I feel it, indeed, to be both of these when I see before me an audience such as the present - an audience (I speak now of its student portion) such as scarce another provincial, and but few metropolitan schools, can surpass even in numbers - none, I hope I may safely say, in the character and efficiency of its individual members. Gathered around me, too, are many who, no less by the influence of their personal example and upright conduct, than by their scientific attainments and practical skill, have earned for themselves a high position among us, and who have laboured zealously, and laboured with success, to elevate the standard and uphold the dignity of our profession in this great town.
