St. Louis is the fourth city of the Its Importance. United States in regard to population. It is located on the west bank of the Mississippi, about twenty miles south of the mouth of the Missouri River. It is the largest city and railroad center in the Mississippi Valley and important both as a manufacturing city and as a distributing market for products representing the entire country. Its location makes it a point of exchange between manufactured products and the products of the soil. It has a central position in regard to the two great agricultural States of Missouri and Illinois. Missouri is rich in minerals, especially lead and zinc.
