Excerpt from Report of the President of the Board of Education: And Fifth Annual Report of the Superintendent of Public Schools, for the Year Ending Feb 1, 1859
Gentlemen: I am aware that it has not been customary for any officer of this Board, except the Superintendent, to present a report at the close of our school year; still it has appeared to me, as it has to others, that it would not be inappropriate, at the present time, to suggest some matters worthy of consideration. I need say nothing to you of the importance of the position which we hold as Directors of the Public Schools of our city. The moral and educational interests of twelve thousand children are, in a great measure, placed in our hands, and the destiny of many of these children will be decided by the manner in which we discharge the trusts imposed on us. If we neglect to employ the best teachers we can command, or if we neglect the proper supervision of the teachers and of the schools, we neglect a duty for which no subsequent regrets or labor can atone.
