Excerpt from The ?neid of Virgil: With English Notes
The reputation which Professor Anthon has already established for himself in this country, as a skilful critic, and elegant illustrator of the Latin Classics, renders it unnecessary for us to expatiate here on that subject. Suffice it, therefore, to remark, that the ?neid in no wise falls short of his previous works, for lucid exposition, happy rendering, and sedulous investigation of the meaning of his author.
The bulk, however, of the Transatlantic edition militated against its general introduction into this country, as a School-book; - a difficulty which, it is hoped, has been removed by this Reprint. Those notes which appeared needlessly prolix and diffuse, have been curtailed; some altogether omitted; in order that room might still be left for the exercise of the student"s ingenuity. The position of the notes has not been changed: for, although footnotes would have, doubtless, been more easy of reference, and, on that account, more valuable in the eyes of the adult scholar; yet, at the same time, this alteration would not have been equally beneficial to the school-boy, for whom this Reprint is chiefly designed.
