These lectures are now published at the request of many of my friends, and are intended to be useful not only to officers in preparing for their examinations for promotion, but also to officers of the Militia and others competing for commissions in the Army, and to officers generally who take an interest in their profession, but who for various reasons have not had full opportunity of studying these matters.
The endeavour has been to make them as concise as possible, and at the same time not to leave out anything of importance, or anything contained in the prescribed syllabus.
