Excerpt from Claremont of History and to-Day

The paddle, the wind, and then - steam. It was thought ridiculous when Fulton and Chancellor Livingston applied to the New York State legislature for exclusive right to navigate the waters of the state by steam, and the tenure would probably have been made for a hundred years with as little thought as it was then made for twenty. "Fulton"s folly," they called it, but the little "Clermont" steamed from New York, passing those on Claremont Hill who believed in her, fled from on all sides by superstitious boatmen, and reached Albany in thirty-two hours.
