Excerpt from History of the Geological Society of Glasgow, 1858-1908: With Biographical Notices of Prominent Members
This volume has been issued to eomuiemorate the Jubilee of The Geological Society of Glasgow. In the first chapter is given a brief sketch of the Geology of the Clyde Valley and notices of some of the earlier workers in this field. We are indebted to Mr. A.C. White for much of the material relating to the life of John Craig. The second chapter, dealing with the origin and early history of the Society, has leen reprinted from the paper by Mr. Thomas M.Barr, in vol. vii. of the Transiictions, Chapter iii. gives an account of the principal events that have taken place in the history of the Society since its foundation in 185 S.The following five chapters give a summary of fifty years work in the various departments of geological inquiry that have been pursued by the members of the Society. The titles and authors of the various chapters are as follows: Physical and Dynamical Geology, by Professor J.W. Gregory, D.Sc, F.Rs.; Stratigraphical Geology, by Mr. Peter Macnair, F.R.S.E., F.G.S.; Palaeontologiciil Geology, by Mr. James Neilson; Mineralogy and Petrology, by Mr. Joseph Sommerville; Glacial Geology, by Mr. Johj Smith; chapters ix., x., and xi. contain biogi-aphical nqttrcs cf some of the Societys more prominent members. The notices have been contributed by Professor Glrcg)ry, Dr. John Home, F.R.S., Mr. Joseph Sommerville, Mr. Robert Dunlop, Mr. William Jolly, Mr. John Smith, and the Honorary Secretaries, Mr. Peter Macnair, F.R.S.E., F.G.S., and Mr. Frederick Mort, M.A., B.Sc, F.G.S. The Index has been compiled by Mr. J.W. Reoch.
