Excerpt from The History of Magnus Maharba and the Black Dragon
Some time since certain curious manuscripts were discovered in the library of a New York antiquarian, purporting to be chapters in the history of a king named Magnus Maharba. The orthography was quite unlike any thing known to the present generation, and bore a strong resemblance to the old Saxon, every sound having its appropriate character, while the silent letters, introduced into our language by the Norman French, were wholly wanting.
This remarkable story has been published and widely circulated in its original form, but many persons find a difficulty in reading it, on account of its antique spelling. The present edition will obviate that objection.
The author of the work gives no clew to the time or place of the occurrences he has narrated. The publishers have a suspicion that it is not as ancient as it would at first seem; but they will leave the reader to form his own opinion after completing the story.
