The following pages were written on the voyage home between Boulogne and New York for the purpose of preserving the fruits of my observations and as an omnibus letter to family and friends.
A small edition was printed for private distribution. The demand for copies, however, exceeded the supply, hence the present edition, which is printed without material alteration.
