Excerpt from On Education, and the Duties of Civil Life
James Mott, the author of the following treatise, was born near Hempstead Harbor, L. I., in the year 1742. His parents died when he was a child. After his marriage, he removed to New York and engaged in mercantile business; but amid the many dangers and temptations to which he was exposed, he was so preserved as at length to become useful in religious society.
In the year 1776, owing to the state of his wife's health and the troubles of the country, he removed to Mamaroneck.
His wife died shortly after, leaving him with five small children, to the instruction of whom be devoted himself with a pious and affectionate solicitude.
To this circumstance, together with the recollection of the situation in which his own childhood had been passed, may be traced that warm and affectionate interest which he ever after took in the education of youth.
