Excerpt from Genealogy of the Hoffman Family: Descendants of Martin Hoffman, With Biographical Notes
Some years ago I began to collect material to make a genealogy of the Hoffman Family in this country. It gradually grew upon my hands, and I soon found that to make it complete required much more time than I was able to give to it. Recently I placed the material in the hands of my friend, Miss Elizabeth Dodds, who, with great pains and patience, has visited the localities where the graves of the family ancestors are to be found, copied the data on their tombstones and in the records of the old Dutch Churches, together with those found in family Bibles, wills and deeds, and from these has been able to compile a nearly complete list of the descendants of its first ancestor, Martin Hoffman, who emigrated to America in 1657, and settled in Ulster County, N. Y. The Genealogy is now printed for the benefit of the various members of the family who are interested in the records of their ancestors and the names of those with whom they are more or less closely connected.
