In answering the call for a new edition of his work, which its favorable reception by the public has made, the author has taken occasion to modify its title somewhat, in order to indicate more clearly and definitely the purpose and character of the book. He has also improved the opportunity of a new issue to make its statements conform to the most recent facts in relation to certain subjects, in respect to which even a year may effect important changes.
The book was written with the hope of doing something to improve our country-houses and the grounds around them in respect to tastefulness and comfort, and so to make them more truly homes, to which their inmates would be bound by life-long ties of endearment and remembrance. The many letters which the author has received from time to time from unknown readers in various parts of the country, and the pleasant acquaintances thus made, are the ample assurance that his expectation in writing has not been disappointed.
