The general happiness of individuals constituting society, the laws that are passed, the alterations in the distribution of wealth, the diffusion of culture, the interest taken in one branch of energy rather than in another, and perhaps, more than anything else, the ever changing aims and aspirations of so many individuals and sections, are ever affecting the internal condition and external relations of nations. The result of all this general movement is the progress or decay of the nation, its greater strength or weakness.
It is the purpose of this volume to show what are the general and fundamental laws and tendencies that govern this movement. Undoubtedly, geographical surroundings and other external elements all play a very important part in starting and individualising the life of a nation.
