Excerpt from The Battle of Harlem Heights, Vol. 2
Any event in the Revolution that made a distinct contribution to the establishment of independence has its share of interest to the patriotic American; but the "affair" at Harlem Heights has a general importance, colored with a local interest, which specially merits our attention and admiration. Its general importance is attested by the fact that, coming as it did immediately after the calamity on Long Island, it served as a prelude to the brilliant exploits at Trenton and Princeton; while its local interest is clear, when we remember that it was the only contest within the limits of Greater New York that resulted in a victory for the Americans. The battle of Harlem Heights, therefore, has a peculiar charm to the citizen of the metropolis.
