Excerpt from The Book of Family Devotion: Approved and Commended by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada
This Book of Devotion, which is issued by authority of the General Assembly, is designed to provide devotional aids to worship in the home. The hope is that it will not only supply prayers, simple, heart felt, and reverent, for family use, but that it will also awaken a prayerful spirit which will in course of time create its own forms of expression.
The first place has been given to fourteen prayers, seven for the mornings and seven for the evenings of the week. These form the kernel of the book and are intended to become familiar to the members of the household as showing them the wide range of human needs, and some of the best ways of expressing them. Each of the prayers in this division has been kept within the strictest limit as to length, and the ever-recurring wants of family life in our day have been kept constantly in view.
A selection of short devotional sentences from Scripture is prefixed to each of the prayers. These are brief, and for the most part ejaculatory utterances, intended to kindle a devotional spirit and prepare the way for the rest or the service.
