Excerpt from The Family Assistant, or Book of Prayers for the Use of Families
Several years ago, the author, at the solicitation of a number of personal friends, prepared and published a book of prayers for the use of families. The main consideration urged in favor of the measure was, that the books of this nature already in use, were generally too elevated in style, to be used to advantage by those, who need the help they are intended to afford. Hence it was thought desirable, that another be prepared, in which simplicity and directness of language should be specially observed.
Although an edition of three thousand copies was published, it has long since been exhausted. We had thought, that perhaps it had fully subserved its purpose. The frequent inquiries after it, however, especially during the last few years, has led us to believe, that the want for it still exists, and is likely to continue for some time to come. Hence the work has been carefully revised, with a view to shorten the prayers and further simplify their language, and is now presented to the public in a stereotyped form.
As stated in the Preface to the first edition, a large proportion of the prayers are original.
