This book is the result of the labors of a committee chosen by the Directors of the American Unitarian Association, in response to the request of a considerable number of people among the constituency which that- Association aims to serve, and in accordance with a vote passed at one of its annual meetings. While there is no universal agreement among liberal churches as to the value of liturgical forms, many of them make more or less use of different printed forms of service; and there has been of late much demand for a book of worship that might find general acceptance. The work of preparing such a book was intrusted to a large and representative committee, in order that the book might be as inclusive as possible of the needs of different minds.
The committee determined, at the outset, that its work should be limited to editing and arranging the material already in existence.
