Being anxious that my theory, as applied simply to the orthography of architecture, should be brought before the highest tribunal which this country affords, in order that its truth might be thoroughly tested before it was offered to the public, I took the liberty of sending the substance of the following pages, accompanied by ample illustrations, as a communication to the Royal Institute of British Architects, and it was read at a meeting of that learned body by one of the members, on the 7th February 1853.
