The part that credit plays in the general organization of modern life is portrayed in the Text on "Economics - The Science of Business." In the present volume credit appears as a phase of business management. It is the purpose of the Text to show the general principles which underlie the granting of credit as well as the business organization in its various aspects, which has made possible the conduct of business on a large scale upon the basis of credit.
It is recognized that only one-half the story is told when credit is granted, that it is not complete till the promised money has been collected. Collections indeed are so intimate a part of credit operations that they cannot be severed from it except by a crude mental surgery. They occupy, therefore, a considerable space in the present treatment.
In the preparation of this Text the writers have drawn upon many sorts of opinion and experience. They are largely indebted to Mr. George P. Woodruff, of the Alexander Hamilton Institute, for the preparation of the initial chapters of the book devoted to the different forms of credit and for the consideration of the legal aspects of the questions of debt and bankruptcy which is given in the latter part of the volume.
