Psychology may approach the study of religion along either of two lines. It may come as a pure science to study religion in its cold white light, without religious presuppositions. It will then scrutinize the nature of religion and endeavour to discern its facts and deduce its laws. Such purely scientific and critical psychology of religion has a work to do, and it must be permitted to have a full and free right of way in its processes and conclusions. Much of this kind of work has been done, and it has its value. However, the scientific psychologist cannot, any more than any other thinker, wholly strip himself of presuppositions, but consciously or latently has in his mind some religious or philosophical system or assumptions which inevitably shape and colour his study of religion.
The other line of approach to this subject is that which is based on views of religion which are accepted by the psychologist as already established on their own grounds. He then comes to religion to clarify it of error and to confirm and illuminate it, as other psychologists approach the study of education or business as established fields of human activity and proceed to illuminate them with the light of their science.
The present volume follows the second of these two lines of approach.
