Excerpt from In Cairo and Jerusalem: An Eastern Note-Book

Tea and toast were being served on the terrace of the New Hotel, when a dusty arabiyeh - the victoria of Cairo, drawn by two gaunt horses - drew up before the front entrance, and we were rushed through rows of small tea-tables and hooded chairs, past the bright awnings, which shaded the John Bull section of men and maidens, in riding costume, who were easily distinguishable, even at half a glance, from the French and Russians flowering forth in colors like a rose-garden. The occupants of the draped and much-bedecked piazza seemed fain to keep clear of us and our dust; the tourist who arrives tired and travel-stained from IsmaYlia generally preferring rather to see than to be seen.
