All the Essays in this volume have already been published. Two were read at St. Andrew's before the students of the University. One was delivered before a scientific society at Plymouth. The paper on the Eastern Question appeared in the "Westminster Review" in October, 1857. The rest have been contributed at various times during the last four years, to "Fraser's Magazine."
